Memorial Day activities on tap in Gunnison

On Sunday, May 25, the American Legion Post, SAL, Auxiliary and Boy Scout Troop 476 will be at the Gunnison Cemetery placing an American Flag on each of the 548 veteran's graves. There are 62 Civil War veterans buried in the cemetery, as well as 7 Spanish-American; 114 World War I; 238 World War II; 66 Korean era; 42 Vietnam era; 3 Gulf war veterans and 16 unknown. The Memorial Day Service is scheduled for Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. The guest speaker this year is Mark High, a teacher at Gunnison Middle School who served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Monday morning, flags will be placed on the streets of Gunnison in front of participating merchants' businesses. If you have subscribed to the program and do not receive your flag, call Claire at 209-6042.  If you know of a grave of a veteran at the Gunnison Cemetery that does not receive a flag, call Ruth at 641-0172.

The American Legion Auxiliary has poppies available for donations during "Poppy Week," this week, through Memorial Day. These donations are used to aid local veterans and/or their families. Wear your poppy proudly and come to the Memorial Day service at the cemetery and give tribute to our deceased veterans.
