Eugene David Lorig, Sr.

Gene Lorig was born in Telluride, Colo., on February 6, 1927 and died at home in Paonia, Colo., on July 23, 2016. He is survived by his wife Margo. They had 58 years together. He is also survived by his four children, Darrah Miller (husband Clay); Dorothy Lorig; E. David Lorig; and Kenyon Lorig. As well as four grandchildren, Bryce and Brandon Miller, and Arthur and Magdalene Rickard. Gene grew up in Telluride and Durango and served in the Army Air Forces following the end of World War II. He then attended and graduated from Western State College in Gunnison. He worked at a gold mine in Telluride and in the oil fields at Rangely, Colo. He graduated from Westminster Law School in Denver while working at a soils engineering company and practiced law in Eagle, Longmont, and back in Eagle, before retiring to Paonia in 1997. Gene loved hiking and climbing mountains, particularly in the area near Fulford above Eagle, Colo. where he had a small cabin built for extended stays as well as day visits. He also enjoyed cross country skiing and bicycling. He and Margo also enjoyed many trips in the U.S. including Alaska as well as Canada and Mexico. Gene had several causes in which he played a major part including the Humane Society in Longmont, supporting the medical clinic in Eagle, the successful campaign against the proposed Adam’s Rib ski area near Eagle, and supporting the Blue Sage Center for the Arts in Paonia. He was a longtime hospice volunteer and hospice attended him at the end of his life.
