Zane Tristan Mason

Zane Tristan Mason was born on Aug. 25, 1981 in Gunnison. He arrived into theMason family four-and-a-half weeks early, crashing in on his brother Amiel’s birthday, which the two shared for 33 years. Zane died on Monday afternoon, March 16 while snowskating out of bounds on Crested Butte Mountain. As the youngest of the four Mason brothers, Zane always expressed his individuality. His conversations sparked many debates, questions and late nights. He spent endless hours creating exceptionally detailed and unique artwork that he shared freely with those he loved. Always searching for creative and new ways to scale, jump and huck himself into life and all it has to offer, Zane spent every moment pushing the envelope — and pushing the buttons of anyone nearby enough to listen. He embodied being “one of a kind” from his absolutely unforgettable laugh, to his determination to live life beyond the fullest each and every day. Zane was an artist, mentor, fitness trainer, extreme sportsman, student of quantum physics and lover of adventure. If we are to learn from his life, the lesson is, “Do what you love and don’t be afraid to be who you are.” Zane managed to be who he was even if it scared the pretty girl away, crossed a major boundary that offended or shocked, or made people stare in wonderment. For him, sharing himself and his truth was most important. If you have additional questions beyond that, Zane would say, “You just have to do the math.” He was known to his friends as Sugar Bear, Zanelander, Zan-Yea, El Zanja, Zaney, Zaner, InZane, Zanal, Pony Boy, Tar Zane and The Quantum Ninja. Those of us that were touched by the force that is Zane have been forever changed. He is survived by his parents Barbara and Gene; his brothers Roland, Ian and Amiel; his sisters- in-law, Melissa and Lori; his nieces and nephews Lyra, Nash and Aeris ; and many uncles, aunts, cousins and friends. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please support The Zane Tristan Mason Memorial Fund which is set up at Bank of the West in Crested Butte. The fund will be used for scholarships in the arts, sports and fitness disciplines.
