The anchor lap of life

The “Healthy Living” special publication in a recent edition of the Gunnison Country Times should be, but isn’t and won’t be, required reading. All the advice about “kicking the smoking habit in the butt,” or that it’s better to eat good things than other things, so forth and so on — all stuff that I was born knowing, a natural.

My strength has always been a basically superhuman capacity for taking advice: “Don’t smoke and drink,” my father told me, so I don’t smoke. “Eat your vegetables,” my mother said. Hey, talk to me about veggie pizza. And exercise? Yes. Absolutely. At my age, it’s unavoidable; just getting out of bed boosts my heartbeat to Usain Bolt levels. But it was the short piece Times Publisher Chris Dickey wrote about running that, well, let’s put it this way: I’m in my anchor lap and that’s all there is to it.
