I once spoke at a friend’s memorial in Telluride, outside on a beautiful day, Elks Park, the middle of town. Referring to my experience of having been with his wife — also a great friend — as she talked on the phone with an “organ donor lady,” I said that, as I listened to the conversation, I’d thought of my daughter, Marianna, off at college. I had thought on that sad morning in the log house my friends had built themselves of receiving from Marianna an always-welcome telephone call: “Dad, I have wonderful news.”
