Flush with pot tax revenue, for now

Colorado is hooked on legal weed.

Not the drug, as much as the tax revenue flowing to state and local coffers, offering endless possibilities for funding new initiatives and shoring up financial shortfalls.

Pro-cannabis communications firm VS Strategies released a report last week detailing the more than half a billion dollars in marijuana tax revenue Colorado has received since recreational retail sales of the drug began Jan. 1, 2014. More than 51 percent has gone to K-12 education with smaller slices of the pie divvied among substance abuse prevention and treatment, regulation, youth services, criminal justice and public safety, research and education, and other public health initiatives.
