How did a word — black — with such a negative connotation ever come to describe the unofficial kick-start of a season devoted to joy and merriment?

I’m talking about Black Friday. While each year holiday preparations occur earlier and earlier, until, I swear, one day in the not-too-distant future “Christmas in July” will have a whole new meaning, Black Friday is generally recognized as launching the holiday shopping season.
