Thankful for this path

A thin layer of soft, new snow covers the ground at Hartman Rocks, muffling the sound of my footsteps. Climbing out from Aberdeen, I follow the track of a lone cyclist — a fatbiker — wondering if it is Gary Pierson or perhaps Jefe who rode before me.

Whoever it was, their trail would be my only companion this Sunday morning.

The air is crisp and clean, like it gets this time of year as winter’s long, icy grip begins to settle around the Gunnison Valley. The deep blue of a November sky is punctuated by the sharpening contrast of the newly whitened peaks.
