Voters narrowly approve transportation initiative

A tax increase aimed at improving air and ground transportation in the Gunnison Valley was approved by a narrow margin in Tuesday’s election.

The proposal by the Gunnison Valley Rural Transportation Authority (RTA) means the entity Jan. 1 will begin collecting a 1 percent sales tax districtwide — raising the assessment from the current 0.35 percent in the City of Gunnison and 0.6 in other parts of the county, including the towns of Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte.
