USFS to issue more fishing permits

Local outfitters less than thrilled about plan to allow more guides
Chris Rourke Times Staff Writer.

In response to complaints that fishing permits on coveted bodies of water in the Gunnison Basin are too difficult to obtain, the U.S. Forest Service is making temporary permits available to both currently permitted outfitters and new applicants. But not everyone is excited about the prospect. The Gunnison Ranger District plans to issue seven temporary walk/wade fishing permits in 50-day blocks. Five of the permits (a total of 250 days) will be issued to new applicants, and two (a total of 100 days) will be given to existing guides that are already permitted. These permits can be used anywhere in the district, said Forest Service spokesman Ray Ros sman. However, only 20 percent of the permits can be used on Taylor River or Spring Creek below their respective reservoirs.
