Luena R. Cadwell

Luena R. Cadwell passed away Dec. 22 at home in Gunnison. Luena was born in Delta since the roads from Powderhorn to Gunnison were many times closed by snow or mud in the spring of 1931. She grew up working on the family ranch in Powderhorn. Luena was the fourth generation to do so. Luena like her father enjoyed fishing the Cebolla and Powderhorn creeks. Luena and brother John provided the family with meat by hunting deer. After graduating from Gunnison High in 1948 Luena stayed on the ranch until meeting Stanley Cadwell from Cathedral up the Cebolla from Powderhorn. They married and started their life on the Cadwell ranch in Cathedral. They had a son and daughter before moving to Gunnison, where Stan worked for Long Oil Co. and the Phillips 66 Service Station. Stan took over the business which became Stan's 66 Service. Luena managed the business and the family and Stan pumped and delivered gas and diesel all over the Gunnison area and also repaired cars. Stan and Luena decided the repair business involved less government regulation so they built Stan's Oil Co. The shop became a meeting place for many ranchers and townspeople, coffee was always on. Luena was again the  manager of the family and the business, while Stan was the one to get things running again. He even made ranch calls to get ranchers back in the field at haying time. Luena and Stan operated Stan's Oil for over 50 years. Stan and Luena were always together and since Stan passed away in March they are again together. Luena is survived by children Steve (Doni) of Powderhorn, Chris of Gunnison, grandsons Charles of Gunnison and John of Colorado Springs, sisters Kathy McGregor of Gunnison and Jean Vader of Montrose. Luena was preceded in death by parents John A. and La Veta McGregor, brothers Charles and John McGregor. Memorial Services for both Luena and Stan will be at the McGregor family cemetery in Powderhorn this summer.
