I visited Gunnison for the first time in the summer of 1974 as I was traveling from the Midwest to California. That fall as I attended school back in southern Illinois, I often thought about all the places I had driven through the previous summer. When the time came to head back out West the following summer, I found myself back in the Gunnison-Crested Butte area again. I guess you could say that Gunnison made an impression on me, and I kept coming back here for the next several years until I moved here permanently in 1982.
