Political preseason is upon us

Elections are a lot like football games. Spectators choose a side to back, watch the players face off, and then they beat the tar out of one another until the clock runs out in November. With last week’s county caucuses initiating a build-up to major parties’ state assemblies, consider this time of year the preseason. Fans — or political junkies like me — get a glance at players’ performance. Who’s got the stamina for the long slog to November, and who doesn’t? Who hits hard enough to outlast their opponent? Whose fancy footwork can get them out of even the most condemning scandal?
