Committed to finding fixes

By Will Shoemaker

On a workbench in the shed behind my house is a rusty tin toolbox, its corners riveted back together countless times. Inside is a cadre of Craftsman hand tools — from back when the company was the standard for quality and reliability.

I inherited this collection of gadgets — to some a recipe for confusion, to others the keys for correcting many a mechanical malady — when my grandfather died. Th e same toolbox he used to start a Shell service station near the crossroads of America that grew in size and scope until he decided to sell. The same hand tools he later used to fix his old Ford 8N tractor that was the lifeblood of his small cattle operation and grain farm on the Great Plains.
