Planners’ attempts to accommodate the latest trend in affordable housing — so-called “tiny homes” — under existing land-use regulations is like squeezing a square peg into a round hole.

Gunnison Valley residents are making moves to take advantage of the flexibility and relatively low cost tiny homes offer but are running into regulatory roadblocks. That’s because the units are caught in a gray area between mobile living quarters and permanent structures, of which they aren’t exactly either.
