Longtime CBMR owner Howard ‘Bo’ Callaway dies

By Will Shoemaker.

A pioneer responsible for transforming Crested Butte from a former mining town into a recreation mecca has died. Howard “Bo” Callaway, a co-owner of Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) spanning three decades, is remembered for his devotion to conservation, love of nature and approach to ski area operations that prioritized guest service. He was 86. In the Gunnison Valley, Callaway, a native of Georgia, is best known for turning a bankrupt ski area into the main attraction in “the last great Colorado ski town.” He and brother-in-law Ralph Walton purchased the ski area in 1970, but it wasn’t the first choice.
