Robert E. Sargent

Rober t E. Sargent , 89, passed away peacefully in his sleep Saturday, May 2 at the Gunnison Valley Health Senior Care Center. Robert E. Sargent, a.k.a. Sarg, was born Feb. 16, 1926, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Bert and Opal Sargent. Robert was born fifth out of seven siblings who became very close during their childhood summers spent on the family farm. Robert went on to graduate high school in 1944 from East High School in Des Moines. As a young man, Bob enjoyed being active and participated on the high school swim team and ran for the cross-country team earning a spot in East High School’s Sports Hall of Fame. He then ventured to Colorado to pursue further education  from the University of Colorado  in Boulder. He earned a dual Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering and Business Administration in 1949.  He then went to work for the family owned business known  as Sargent Feed Company in Des Moines. With his experience gained he was able to create Sargent Wholesale Feed  with his business partner John Lynch. He sold the business and retired in the early ‘90s. While in Boulder he met his late wife Marion Sander and married her in 1948. They went on to have two sons and two daughters, whom they raised in Des Moines. Marion and Bob made it a priority to continue to bring their children back to Colorado for ski trips and summer vacations. In 1975 they bought a cabin up the Ohio Creek Valley in Gunnison. Throughout Bob’s life he had many achievements; these included sitting on the board of directors of the Iowa State Bank, serving as president of Des Moines Feed Club and serving as a council member of Windsor Heights Lutheran Church, just to name a few. He also remained active through out his life and was often found skiing or hiking with his grandchildren in Colorado. He is survived by his children, Linda (Cameron) Dierks, Brent Sargent and Jeanne (Mike Brown) Sargent; his grandchildren,  Amanda Roberts, Jarad (Layne) Sargent, Jamie (Heidi) Sargent, Lauren (Wesley) Israel, and Lisa Goldman; and his great-grandchildren, Aiden  argent, Benjamin Sargent and Breckston Sargent. He is also survived by his siblings, Eloise (Bob) Frampton, Jack Sargent and Luc i l e (Russell) Johnson, all of Des Moines; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extendedfamily. He was preceded in death by his wife Marion Sargent, son Kevin Sargent, and siblings Warren Sargent, Marguerite Rogerson and Vivian Williams. Memorial contributions may be directed to Gunnison Valley Health Senior Care Center or t. Calvary Lutheran Church in Gunnison. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Gunnison.
