‘The Legend of the Rent’

Affordable housing. It sounds so sterile when you say it like that. Sanitized. Neutral. Like most of the words we use to describe important social issues, these seem to have been selected by big-brained and well-meaning people who are very good at writing bullet points for policy papers and strategic plans. No doubt, there’s a time and place for that, but — “Affordable housing!” — just won’t cut it if you’re marching on the state capitol and need a rallying cry. Where’s the heat? Where’s the call to action, or line in the sand? Where’s the imagery that captures what’s really going on?
