Breaking the rules of digging

Legendary cowboy philosopher and humorist Will Rogers once remarked: “If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.”
That’s just the kind of blindingly obvious observation that made Rogers famous. But like with most folksy wisdom, heeding this advice is far easier said than done. After all, we generally pick up a shovel and start digging for good reasons (or so we think) — and to stop digging requires abandoning those goals.
