It is an epidemic that is sweeping the state. It already has reached some outer fringes of the Gunnison Basin, and it’s creeping closer to home by the day. “It” is dying forests. Hundreds of thousands of acres of trees across Colorado have been killed by spruce beetle. Forest managers have every expectation that this “graveyard of timber,” as Times reporter Chris Rourke puts it in an important news story this week, will envelope the Gunnison Valley.
