The ultimate honor for veterans

This year, Veterans Day caught me in a nostalgic and reflective mood — not my typical response to the holiday. Let’s face it, as national holidays go, Veterans Day is kind of an oddball. For one thing, it’s in November, wedged between Halloween and Thanksgiving. Two other prominent holidays at least serve as bookends to summer — Memorial Day in May and Labor Day in September — and provide the perfect excuse for backyard barbecues and trips to the beach.
