CPW proposing ‘data analysis unit’ for all of West Elks

Management of elk in Colorado’s game management unit 54 northwest of Gunnison has for years befuddled Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) officials. Conflicts between the animals and agricultural producers led to a slashing of herd numbers beginning seven years ago.

But some hunters say the elk-reduction effort in the unit has gone too far, leaving little opportunity for harvest. And still, problems persist with animals seeking refuge on ranchlands.
