Local leaders call two-term lawmaker ‘ally’ for rural issues

When state Sen. Gail Schwartz was elected eight years ago, she set out to champion legislative efforts aimed at creating jobs, boosting education and protecting natural resources. But her path took a turn early on that’s left in its wake a legacy defined by a devotion to rural Colorado and the Western Slope. Schwartz — a Democrat, who’s hanging up her hat as a lawmaker after serving two terms in the Senate — joined the legislature with a public service background in education.
