Sylvester Farner

Sylvester Farner, 84, of Gunnison passed away on Sept. 4. He was born on Jan. 20, 1930, to Joseph and Salome Farner in La Cross, Kan. On March 30, 1953, Sylvester married Dolores Tennent in Denver and together they raised one son and two daughters. Syl attended schools in Sterling, Colo. He later joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War. After his service to the country, he opened up Syl’s RV in Gunnison and Mesa, Ariz., which he proudly owned and operated for 30 years. Syl also owned and operated the Quarter Circle Restaurant in Gunnison for seven years. Syl also ranched in the Doyleville area of Gunnison and raised 75 head of buffalo during this time. Syl loved all animals, for which he had a special gift. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved deep sea fishing in the Baja of Mexico. Syl was the “unofficial Mayor of Gunnison,” as he loved conversing with friends, family and those he met in town. Spending time with his grandchildren, helping and teaching them, was something that Syl truly cherished. He is survived by daughters, Nanette (Ernie) Reed, Joyce Reynolds and son Scott (Tracy), all of Brighton; grandchildren, Marty, Mandi, Davey, Sil as and Shaun; brothers Donald (Betty) Farner, Bill (Jackie) Farner and Jim (Dorothy) Farner all of Brighton; sisters Betty Martin of Windsor, Carol Specht of Brighton, Maxine (Jim) Pugh of Grand Junction and Barbara Kraft of Brighton; nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his loving wife Dolores Farner; two brothers and one sister. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, Sept. 12 at 11 a.m. at Brighton United Methodist Church. Tabor-Rice Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
