Owing more than just a monument

Few people were in the park that day, probably due to the threatening skies, along with a chilling breeze intruding from the southwest.

I apprehensively chose a corner table nearest to my car which would give me sanctuary on a moment’s notice if the foreboding weather took a turn for the worse, and prepared to open my late afternoon lunch. Looking up, a dark metal-grated fence stood out in front of me. Within this enclosure was a facsimile of a soldier’s helmet forged onto the buttstock of an inverted rifle with its bayonet implanted into the monument’s ground. A pair of combat boots completed the cast, with the toes facing the same direction as the front of the solitary helmet.
